History

The York Street Project is one of the youngest ministerial buds in the Mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace, who have served from our present site since 1885.

The vision for The Project was steeped in the founding mandate of the Congregation – to establish peace in family life, the church, and society. The specific ministries of housing and education among homeless and economically-disadvantaged women and children were dictated, more than 20 years ago, through the voices of the poor in Jersey City as well as our reading the signs of the times.

Since 1989, women and children have come to York Street seeking refuge, rest and a new beginning. Through our alternative high school, housing for homeless families and the working poor, and early childhood education, we have offered them an opportunity to stabilize their often precarious lives and look to their future with hope.
